Getting a timber gate that does not drop
Almost every sagging timber gate comes down to two things: a hinge post that is too light for the load, or a frame without a proper diagonal brace. We build with a braced frame and set the hinge post deeper and in more concrete than a standard fence post.
Width matters. Past about 1.2 metres in a single leaf, a timber gate becomes heavy enough that a double is the better answer.
Latches and hardware
You choose the latch in the calculator. A basic D-latch suits a low use side gate. A magnetic self latching unit is the better choice on any gate near a pool, a path children use, or a yard with a dog that tests the gate.
All gates come lockable, either with a keyed latch or a padlock ready drop bolt.
