Horizontal aluminium slat fencing is the premium modern boundary. Slats run left to right across powder-coated posts, with spacing set for the privacy you want. It does not rot, rust or need painting, and it is the finish most Melbourne homeowners have in mind when they picture a contemporary front fence.
Slat width and spacing
Slats commonly come in 65mm and 90mm profiles. Narrower slats mean more pieces per square metre, which lifts both material cost and install time but gives a finer, more detailed look.
Spacing controls privacy. Tight or closed spacing blocks the view completely and uses more slats, so the per metre price rises. A small gap costs less, lets air through and still screens a footpath view at an angle.
How your runs affect the quote
Slat panels are made in fixed lengths, so a run that does not divide neatly needs a panel cut down. The calculator asks for each run separately because a single long run is cheaper per metre than several short ones.
Every run also needs its own end posts. That is the main reason a stepped or broken up boundary costs more than a straight one of the same total length.
Is it worth the premium over Colorbond
On a front boundary, usually yes. Aluminium slat is the difference between a house that looks finished from the street and one that does not, and it will not need painting or post replacement for decades.
