When extending beats rebuilding
If the posts and footings are solid and it is only height you need, extending costs roughly half what a new fence does. Common triggers are a new double storey next door, a pool going in, or a dog that has worked out how to jump.
The catch is the posts. Push hard on a few along the run. If they move at the base, the footing has already failed and adding height will only make it worse. In that case we will tell you at the site check and price a rebuild instead.
Solid, lattice or slat
A solid Colorbond extension gives full privacy but catches wind like a sail, which puts extra load on footings that were not designed for the extra height.
Lattice and slat toppers let air through, look intentional at the join line and are the safer choice on an older fence. They also soften a tall fence so the yard does not feel boxed in.
Height rules and your neighbour
Most Victorian councils allow up to 2.0m on a boundary between neighbours without a permit, with lower limits on street frontages and extra rules in heritage or overlay areas.
For a shared boundary fence you should agree the change with your neighbour first. Under the Fences Act, a contribution usually requires a fencing notice and agreement, so if the extra height is purely for your benefit, expect to fund it.
