Why Colorbond is the default choice in Melbourne
Colorbond is steel, so it does not rot, does not warp and termites have no interest in it. The baked on finish holds colour for decades and never needs painting. For most Melbourne backyards it is the lowest lifetime cost option once you count the staining a timber fence needs.
It also goes up fast. Posts, rails and sheets are a system, so a straight residential run can be completed in a day once the footings are set.
The trade off is dents. A hard knock from a trailer or a football leaves a mark that cannot be sanded out, though single sheets can be swapped without pulling the fence apart.
Heights, slopes and plinths
Standard heights are 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.1m. On sloping ground the fence either steps down in panel increments, which leaves triangular gaps at the bottom, or rakes with the ground, which costs more because sheets have to be cut on an angle.
A concrete or steel plinth at the base closes gaps on a slope, keeps garden beds off the sheets and stops pets digging under. On any block with a fall across it, a plinth is money well spent.

Colours that actually work
Woodland Grey, Monument and Basalt are the most popular because dark tones recede and make a yard feel larger. Surfmist and Classic Cream suit older weatherboard homes and bounce more heat.
