A standard timber paling side gate supplied and installed usually costs $600 to $950 inc GST. Double gates and driveway width openings run higher because of the frame, the posts and the hardware needed to keep a wide leaf from sagging.
Typical installed cost: $600 to $950 for a single gate inc GST
Single pedestrian gate up to 1m wide: $600 to $950. Frame, posts, hinges and latch
Double gates up to 3.6m opening: $1,400 to $2,600. Two leaves, heavier posts
D&D LokkLatch Deluxe upgrade: add around $178. Lockable both sides
MagnaLatch upgrade: add around $190. Magnetic top pull latch
Standard D-latch: add around $22. Basic latch
Gate on a slope or uneven ground: add 10 to 20%. Custom frame and clearance work
What makes a gate last
Three things: properly sized posts set deep in concrete, a braced frame that resists racking, and hinges rated for the weight. Skimp on any of them and the gate drops within a couple of years.
We build gate frames with a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner upward, which is the direction that actually carries the load.
Single or double
Single gates suit pedestrian access and side paths. Double gates suit driveways, trailer access and wide side openings.
If the opening is over about 1.2m, two smaller leaves are usually better than one wide leaf because each one carries less weight.
