When you should rekey
Move into a new house and you have no idea how many keys are floating around. Builders, agents, past tenants, cleaners and the previous owner's relatives have all had a copy at some point. Rekeying on day one is the cheapest security upgrade you will ever buy.
The other common triggers are a lost or stolen key, the end of a tenancy, a break up, or letting go of a cleaner or trades person who held a key. In all of those cases the lock itself is fine. Only the key needs to stop working.
Rekey or go digital
If you keep handing out keys, a digital lock removes the problem entirely. You issue a code, and you delete it when you no longer want that person coming in. There is no rekey bill every time access changes.
For a household with cleaners, guests, kids or a short stay rental, a digital lock on the main entry plus rekeyed cylinders on the remaining doors is usually the best value combination.
