Pedestrian gate vs driveway gate
A standard pedestrian gate is around 900mm wide and hangs off a single post. It is a straightforward job: build or order the leaf, set the posts if they are not already there, hang it and adjust. That is why prices start near $520.
A driveway gate is a different job. The leaf is far heavier, the posts have to be bigger and set deeper in more concrete, and the hardware has to carry that weight for years without sagging. Once you go past about 3.5 metres of opening a single leaf becomes impractical, so you either split it into a double swing or move to a slider.
The jump in price between a pedestrian gate and a driveway gate is mostly structural. Undersized posts are the single most common reason older driveway gates drop and scrape.
What motorisation really costs
The motor kit itself is only part of the number. A swing gate kit with two rams, a control board, remotes and a safety beam typically lands between $1,500 and $2,800 installed. A sliding kit with a rack and track usually runs $2,200 to $3,500 because the ground has to be prepared and levelled for the track.
Power is separate and it is your responsibility. You organise a licensed electrician to run a circuit and install a weatherproof power point near the gate. We confirm the exact position at the site check so your electrician only has to do the work once.
Extras worth budgeting for are a keypad or intercom, extra remotes, and a battery backup so the gate still opens in a blackout.
Latches and locks
A basic D-latch is fine for a side gate that no one relies on. If the gate is on a path children use, a magnetic self latching unit is a much better choice because it latches every time rather than only when the gate is pushed hard.
Keyed magnetic latches cost more upfront but they do not need adjusting every summer and they hold up to constant use. Since we double the material on latch hardware to cover the fitting and the lock, the difference between the cheapest and best option on a single gate is usually under $200 in total.
