Choosing the right spot
Aim for the sunniest part of the yard that still gets air movement, usually a north facing wall. A clothesline in permanent shade takes twice as long to dry a load in winter.
Check the swing clearance before you settle on a position. A folding frame needs its full arm length clear of fences, taps, downpipes and any garden beds you would rather not stand in.
Height matters too. Set too high and shorter members of the household cannot reach the back lines. Set too low and long sheets drag on the paving.
Wall mount or ground mount
Wall mounting is cheaper, faster and perfectly strong on solid brick. It is the default for most homes.
Ground mounting makes sense when there is no suitable wall, when the wall is cladding without solid backing, or when you want the line out in the open away from the house. It costs more because of the two footings, and the concrete needs to cure before the frame carries a full load.
