Why Colorbond is the default choice in Melbourne
Colorbond is steel, so it does not rot, does not warp and termites have no interest in it. The baked on finish holds colour for decades and never needs painting. For most Melbourne backyards it is the lowest lifetime cost option once you count the staining a timber fence needs.
It also goes up fast. Posts, rails and sheets are a system, so a straight residential run can be completed in a day once the footings are set.
The trade off is dents. A hard knock from a trailer or a football leaves a mark that cannot be sanded out, though single sheets can be swapped without pulling the fence apart.
Heights, slopes and plinths
Standard heights are 1.5m, 1.8m and 2.1m. On sloping ground the fence either steps down in panel increments, which leaves triangular gaps at the bottom, or rakes with the ground, which costs more because sheets have to be cut on an angle.
A concrete or steel plinth at the base closes gaps on a slope, keeps garden beds off the sheets and stops pets digging under. On any block with a fall across it, a plinth is money well spent.
The calculator asks about slope and plinths so the quote reflects your block rather than a flat site average.
Colours that actually work
Woodland Grey, Monument and Basalt are the most popular because dark tones recede and make a yard feel larger. Surfmist and Classic Cream suit older weatherboard homes and bounce more heat.
If you are matching an existing run, tell us the colour name. Faded older sheets never match new ones exactly, so on a partial replacement we will usually suggest doing the whole visible run.
Central Victorian ground is often hard and rocky, particularly around the old goldfields areas. Rock makes post holes slower, which can affect the labour on larger runs.
City of Greater Bendigo generally allows boundary fences to 2.0 metres, with heritage controls through central Bendigo and Eaglehawk.
Hot, dry summers fade timber and paint fast. Oil based stain outperforms paint on paling fences here, and lighter Colorbond colours hold their look longer in the sun.
Larger blocks are common, which means longer fence runs. That works in your favour on per metre pricing since long straight runs are the most efficient to build.
Can Colorbond be installed on sloped ground? Yes. Sheets can be stepped or raked. The calculator accounts for slope by adjusting plinth and post requirements.
What colours are available? All standard Colorbond colours including Surfmist, Basalt, Woodland Grey, Monument and Jasper. Specialty colours may incur a small upgrade.
Do you remove the old fence? Yes, optional in the calculator. A minimum $550 removal charge applies.
